Alicante province has one of Spain's densest festive calendars. There is no month without a significant cultural event — from the Hogueras de San Juan to the Misteri d'Elx, plus dozens of Moros y Cristianos scattered across the coast and inland. If you move to the Costa Blanca, the festivals do not need finding: they find you. This article orders them month by month so you never miss what matters.

January

  • Three Kings Parade (5 January): in every city and town. The Three Kings ride floats throwing sweets to children. Alcoy's is Spain's oldest (since 1866) and one of the most spectacular.
  • San Antón (17 January): bonfires in inland towns. Animal blessings and grilled meats.

February

  • Carnival: Torrevieja has the area's most important carnival. Parades, costumes, competitions.

March

  • Fallas de Dénia: Dénia and some Marina Alta municipalities celebrate with their own monuments (15-19 March).
  • Semana Santa (variable, March-April): religious processions across the province. Highlights: Alicante and Orihuela (both International Tourist Interest), Elche, Crevillente.

April

  • Moros y Cristianos de Alcoy (22-24 April): Spain's largest and most famous. Three days of spectacular parades with 5 000+ participants. International Tourist Interest.

May

  • Cruces de Mayo: streets and squares decorated with floral crosses. Competitions, verbenas, communal meals.
  • Medieval markets: several municipalities in spring with crafts, gastronomy and street shows.

June

  • Hogueras de San Juan (20-24 June): Alicante's most important festival. International Tourist Interest. Detailed in our Hogueras article.
  • San Juan Night (23-24 June): beach bonfires across the entire Costa Blanca.
  • Alicante Film Festival: international film festival with outdoor screenings.

July

  • Moros y Cristianos de Jávea: mid-July. Spectacular parades through the old town with fireworks over the port.
  • Festival de Habaneras de Torrevieja: one of Spain's most prestigious choral festivals. International choirs sing habaneras (Cuban-origin sea songs) outdoors by the sea. Free entry. Magical atmosphere.
  • Moros y Cristianos de Villajoyosa (last week): with the famous Moorish beach landing at dawn.

August

  • Misteri d'Elx (13-15 August): UNESCO Intangible Heritage of Humanity. A medieval liturgical drama sung entirely in old Valencian inside Elche's Basilica of Santa María. The only place in Europe where it has been performed uninterruptedly since the 15th century. Free but extremely limited tickets — apply months in advance.
  • Patron saint festivals: August has the most across the province. Nearly every town celebrates with bulls, verbenas, concerts and processions.
  • Nit de l'Albà (Elche, 13 August): a 'rain' of fireworks launched from every balcony and rooftop simultaneously. A unique popular pyrotechnic spectacle.

September

  • Moros y Cristianos de Calpe: late September or October. Parades with the Peñón de Ifach as backdrop.

October

  • Moros y Cristianos de Benidorm: September-October (variable dates).
  • Fira de Tots Sants (Cocentaina, last week): commercial and artisan fair held since the 13th century. One of Spain's oldest. 700 stalls, 700 years of history.
  • Harvest Festival (inland): celebrations in the Vinalopó wine towns (Villena, Pinoso, Monóvar).

November

  • All Saints' Day (1 November): cemetery visits and traditional sweets (huesos de santo, buñuelos de viento).
  • Remembrance Day (11 November): the British community holds ceremonies in Torrevieja, Jávea, Benidorm and Alicante.

December

  • Nativity scenes and Christmas lights: all municipalities install public nativity scenes and switch on Christmas lights.
  • Christmas markets: crafts, food and atmosphere in Alicante, Benidorm, Jávea, Torrevieja.
  • New Year's Eve (31 December): the tradition of eating 12 grapes with the 12 midnight chimes. Town halls organise public events in main squares with the chimes broadcast on giant screens.

Frequently asked questions

Are most festivals free?

Yes. Moros y Cristianos parades, Hogueras, Semana Santa processions, Torrevieja Habaneras and most events are free and outdoors. The Misteri d'Elx is free but requires an invitation. Theme parks and some concerts have entry fees.

Can foreigners participate?

Yes. Hogueras commissions, Moros y Cristianos comparsas and Habaneras choirs accept members of any nationality. One of the best ways to integrate into local life.

Are there cultural activities outside the festivals?

Yes. Alicante's Teatro Principal has year-round theatre, dance and music. The ADDA Auditorium hosts Alicante Orchestra concerts. Cinemas, exhibition halls and cultural centres have continuous activity.

Which festival do you recommend for a newcomer?

Hogueras de San Juan (June) for the most intense, integrating experience. Moros y Cristianos de Alcoy (April) for the most spectacular. San Juan Night at any beach for something quieter and magical. Misteri d'Elx (August) for medieval culture — UNESCO Heritage, nothing like it in Europe.

Do festivals affect daily life?

Yes. During Hogueras, Alicante centre closes to traffic. During each town's Moros y Cristianos, streets are shut for parades. Semana Santa slows everything for a week. August is unofficially 'holiday month' — many businesses close or reduce hours. If you come from a culture where festivals are discreet, Spanish festive intensity may surprise — but it is integral to what makes life here special.
